I don’t buy a lot of clothes. Like most men my age I have a few good suits for work, tailored to fit, my favourite jeans in two sizes 38 and 40 depending, a couple of blazers and a Barbour I’ve had for a long time. They never wear out. I wear shirts not T shirts and I am usually wearing a cashmere jumper at the weekend. My family know I like N. Peal cashmere and if they are buying me a jumper this is what I get. I have the classic round neck and V neck in a few different colours. I wear size XL.l which fits me not too tight 46” to 48” chest.

The men’s Oxford plain round neck jumpers cost £325 and come in 12 colours and unlike other less expensive cashmere jumpers I’ve had from John Lewis, Marks and Spencer’s even more expensive jumpers from Brora or Johnstons of Elgin where the plain jumpers cost closer for £400, the elbows on the N. Peal jumpers survive a lot longer.

Apart from that I like what Yorkshireman Adam Holdsworth and his family have done with the heritage British brand since bringing it back from the brink in 2006. I like their ethos, simple as.

N.Peal is deeply involved with sustainable cashmere practices, aiming for a transparent and eco-friendly supply chain. They work with GOTS certified Mongolian cooperatives and ensure all their cashmere is traceable from goat to garment, monitoring animal welfare and fiber quality. All the information about ethical sourcing practises is published on their website.

I like buying from brands who tell me who they are and brands that are up front about what they are doing and what they stand for. I’d rather have one jumper made well and wear it for years than always be buying something new. That’s just me.

N.Peal also prioritize responsible manufacturing and aim to protect the environment for their Mongolian herders and goats. Animal welfare is important to me when is comes to garments made from wool and cashmere.

The price of the N.peal jumpers does mean they are too expensive for most if you want one brand new.

All my sons buy N.peal jumpers secondhand they last so well they pop up from time to time in the charity shops close by in Essex where we live, Saffron Walden.

If you have never owned or worn a cashmere jumper I suggest you give it a try. It’s a very interesting wool/textile feels very comfortable to wear and won’t let you get too hot or too cold as it is a fibre that can regulate temperature. Why N. peal cashmere sweaters can be worn all year around.

And the brand is not just for old men. They collaborated with the 007 movie franchise on a ribbed navy sweater “No Time To Die” for James Bond retailing at £375.

It’s fitted and ribbed so not ideal for someone like me but I was really happy to see a brand I love to support gaining international reach through the impressive partnership with the global action man super hero James Bond.

We all like to see ourselves a little like 007 even if it’s because we like the same jumpers.

Funnily enough I started nipping into N.peal after lunch at Hush Mayfair a pretty regular dining lunch spot in the west end opened by Sir Roger Moore until it closed a couple of years ago. It was the end of an era. We’d been going for over 20 years.

I did hear the restaurant with the famous courtyard tucked away behind Brook St 8 Lancashire Court had reopened under new ownership. Jamie (Jamie Barber founder of the Hush Collection) sold the lease on Hush Mayfair to SoHo House in November 2023 so still members only.

At the 97th Academy Awards in March, 2025 Conclave directed by Edward Berger received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, yet won only one for Best Adapted Screenplay, Ralph Fiennes Cardinal Lawrence and Isabella Rossellini sister Agnes both nominated for best actor and best supporting actress losing out to Adrian Brody for the Mentalist and Zoe Saldana for Emilia Perez.

The poor show at the main event in Hollywood doesn’t detract from how magnificent this film actually is and don’t be put off if you not religious, it’s more a film about ambition and corruption, a film about human nature than it is about the actual holy Roman Catholic Church.

Whilst unravelling the mystery and tradition around the sequestering of cardinals to ballot and elect a new pontiff this film whilst having a religious theme is aptly described as a political thriller. It touches much more on power and ambition, common themes in every organisation.

The contrast say between a film like Wolf Of Wall Street, or Vice where the suggestion of corruption is expected in the Church it is certainly less palatable, which makes this film gripping and engrossing. Throughout the film we see people presenting as one thing but actually turning out to be something else just like in the Church’s historic abuse perpetuated and subsequently covered up, a reality in the film, not overlooked.

The sets are absolutely breathtaking and some of the cinematography is that of epic proportion when it comes to film making.

A star studded ensemble cast with more well known faces than I can remember, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci along with a first time performance in film from actor and architect, Carlos Diehz, his breakout role as Cardinal Benitez was truly spectacular.

Two hours absolutely flew by and you’ll never imagine the twist in a million years.

I knew very little about the film when I watched it. I didn’t read any reviews I went in pretty blind hoping it wasn’t too religious. FYI This film is more about reality than dogma. And I think this would be the best way as the ending is so unexpected and original it would be easy to uncover by accident before watching.

No spoilers here.

All in all a very deep, thoughtful and thought provoking film with strong messaging that may leave you with a changed perspective, regardless of faith on what being holy and human at the same time actually means.

My advice for non believers don’t be put off by the theme, it’s an incredible film with a woven layered story that keeps you guessing who of the assembled company will secure the position of the most globally recognised individual in the World. Right until the very end.

And if you are wondering if Cardinals are allowed to vote for themselves, a question in our house, if the film is accurate the answer is yes.

I am very interested in square mile churches and their historical significance, Christopher Wren churches especially. I grew up with religion, went to a church school, was subjected to the in doctrine, dogma, tradition of blind faith, something I no longer buy into. That said I do love a church for it’s scale and architecture, it’s divine purpose as it were, a sanctuary, a vestibule, narthex, a place connecting the serenity to the outside world, a safe haven a place of peace, tranquility and reflection all those things sit well and are useful to me.

This church is close to an old office so I pass by it all the time the building a reminder for me there’s more to life than money, ironically in the years of London’s markets renewal after the Great Fire of London 1666 it was the merchants worshipful city of london companies, the Goldsmiths, the brewers, the livery, that gave funds and support to maintain the church buildings. restored and rebuilt by the architect Sir Christopher Wren.

I don’t attend services, I have only been inside a few times over the years but it’s magnificent inside. The floor alone is worth a look for anyone inspired by pattern and form. I remember having a terrible meeting in one of the bar cellars opposite and stepping inside the empty church absolutely furious to calm down before going back to the office. It didn’t take long in here to redirect my thoughts.

It’s a gorgeous old building tucked away on Foster Lane, EV2 with loads of history in an unlikely back alley setting, a complete contrast to the magnificence of St Paul’s Cathedral the Christopher Wren masterpiece that draws visitors from all around the world and somewhere you’d probably miss unless someone or something interrupts and informs.

St Vedast is an active Anglican Church celebrating Easter services, Easter Mass on Sunday 20th April, 2025 at 11.00am.

You’d never know it’s there really. Easy to miss except those of us that know selfishly like to keep it that way. Hagen Expresso Bars are actually a chain though you’d never know it, relaxed friendly understated and NOT snooty at all and not overly expensive either.

-

They have 2 locations in the City, Leadenhall Market where I first discovered the coffee and Borough Yard, stoney st, near London Bridge both worth a visit but for me bigger, more modern decor and don't hold the charm of the Brook St location. In the west end there's on in Knightsbridge, Marylebone, Chelsea, South Kensington, Mayfair and Belgravia, and the one I like on Brook st, although it’s the Mayfair spot, located at 6 Brook St with an outdoor bar and stools outside you’d never know it. You could be anywhere in the world.

-

I cannot resist the coffee and the hole in the wall no one bothering you experience when I am ever around Berkeley Square. I make a special trip. It's somewhere I love to go along for a 20 minute pick me up. I know there's loads of competition and millions would probably disagree but for me it's the best coffee in Mayfair by a clear mile. The place, you've got to go. You cannot describe it, the thang in a review. you have to experience it for yourself and when you get there you'll know what I am talking about. It's a feeling.

Maybe it’s the Viking heritage silent yet deadly in this particular one always captivating aromas, it’s the very first thing that hits you, the smell, distinctive and inviting immediately catapulting you to the street side Tabacs of rural France where men sit quietly reading, smoking, sipping expresso from tiny handled cups.

They don’t bother you, they don’t have a loyalty program 10 stamps and a free one, nothing like that.

It’s the kind of place where no one has to say anything, everyone just knows and whilst we want Hagen to thrive and grow we also want to keep this special place very special.

Once you taste the coffee coffee lovers they’ll be no going back to Starbucks.

Heads up I just spotted a new Hagen location tucked away in St John’s Wood on 99 St John’s Wood terrace next door to Partners.

I didn’t have time to go in and see what it’s like. If you are in the neighbourhood try the coffee at Hagen.

This is a rave but could have very easily been a rant Turnbull and Asser.

Before we start the ready to wear formal shirts are about 400 quid and I get one if I am lucky about every other year at Christmas. you can buy off the peg or have your shirts tailored made to measure. I am a standard size 17 (FYI they go up to a neck size 19") and I find the fit very comfortable for me without investing in custom tailoring although I do when it comes to my suits.

I don't buy online usually. I like to go into the shop either in Jermyn street or I like this shop at 4 Davies St, open from 9am to 6pm.

I don't know what has happened, change of staff, hard times, not sure however the last couple of times I've popped in and I've been not a massive customer but a customer non the less for years I wasn't treated that well, the assistant was distracted speaking to someone else whilst trying to help me and it didn't work out.

And this was after my wife tried to return/exchange the shirt I'd had for Christmas and there was an issue as she didn't have the original receipt. Not like she'd half inched it but we were scuppered on the exchange without producing the sales receipt. yeah we could have bought Turnbull and Asser shirts nowhere else right.

To sum up, historically a wonderful service, family run, beautiful quality product that 99 times out of 100 couldn't disappoint. The service of late we cannot say the same about. Sadly this has gone a bit downhill.

We have two locals near my office in Exchange Square, one is the White Horse on Appold St access from Exchange Square which isn't fancy, more of an old style boozer with pub grub, fish and chips and the like. They host a few office get togethers breakfast meetings and the beers alright. We tend to end up in option B.

The other place is a cocktail bar with sprawling patio Back to Mine. This is the place we go to more often at lunch time or after work.

They have a happy hour from 12pm until 5pm every day and the staff are really friendly, fast and helpful. The crowd is mixed. I'd say it's a younger place and does get a bit rowdy later on a Wednesday and Thursday night.

They also offer Lucky Saint Beer which I have become quite partial too. They also offer Lucky Saint zero alcohol version which I am trying to go for more frequently.

The patio is large umbrellas and twinkle lights more for shelter from the rain and wind and for chain smokers outside than a bit of shade on a glorious day. The bar interior house a big yellow sofa and 1960s vibe retro décor with a wild animal motif.

Love the lounging golden leopard on the bar.

You can find everything hospitality in the City from Michelin dining to fun and quirky.

Back to Mine is definitely fun and quirky with brilliant service. It's the staff that make this place and why it's usually packed after 5pm.

I travel a fair bit on business. I have used Trip advisor a lot but I rarely get it right when picking somewhere based on reviews alone. What’s good for someone else, a reviewer I don’t know is rarely good for me I’ve found. Why these days I’ve done all my research and stick to what I know meets my needs and the low key discreet hospitality I like when I’m away on business.

Staying in New York City can be challenging. There are loads of options and very easy to lose your shirt paying hundreds of dollars a night for something that’s actually not all that.

I first stayed at the Fitzpatrick about 20 years ago by mistake. And we had such a great time I’ve been back 5 or 6 times since. They say “we’re an upscale lodging with an Irish bent” The most lovely thing about this hotel is this unpretentiousness.

When you first visit the website the Fitzpatrick looks like every other 4/5 star hotel fighting for our business. Gorgeous professional images of delicious food and comfy beds but you get something you cannot feel on a website you get real heart too. At only 91 rooms and suites it’s actually not a massive property so it does feel homely and intimate kind of, for the big Apple.

The reasons I love it. Firstly it’s Irish through and through and that may sound strange but you can feel the Emerald Isle in the walls. It’s five star yet family run. There’s an Irish pub adjacent and the smarter more cosmopolitan Fitz Bar for cocktails. And the hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2019.

The furniture and style is traditional, the rooms have dark mahogany wardrobes and super comfy big sleigh beds.

The hotel could be of another time, when NYC was more merchants and meddlers than bustling metropolis so you get the combination of modern home comfort and luxury in the warmth and relaxation of a time gone by.

Pure hospitality in a way only the Irish really know how to execute with a twinkle.

The last time I was there I did end up meeting and having a few jars with the owner John.

It’s a special hotel in an absolutely superb central location on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 5th.

Cannot recommend highly enough and expect a cheeky room rate too with breakfast. It’ll always be a few dollars less than other equivalent properties that won’t treat you so well.

What the Fitzpatrick are selling is a feeling. When you leave all you can think about is when you can return.

They also have a sister property in Grand Central.

This year outside our local Waitrose we have been treated to or subjected to depending on your perspective to Christmas carols played by a brass band to get everyone in the spirit.

I went to a strict church school in the 1960 so even though I am not religious now and my family kids aren’t religious either I do find myself humming along when the carols are playing.

This is not one of the most recognisable like Silent Night or Away in a manager and yet I found myself unconsciously singing. I found I did know most of the words. Which concerned me a bit as when I sang them I didn’t 100% understand what I was singing.

I even knew there are seven verses, but how?

I heard myself muttering

“Rejoice Rejoice Emmanuel will come to thee O Israel”

I wonder how many of the people playing in the band, all around my age, 50 plus know the words or what they mean either.

I struggle with the word Rejoice and what’s going on in Israel at the moment,

_

When I did a bit of research about this hymn, what it means and actually questioned why I at school had heard it so many times I was pretty much word perfect even though I haven’t stepped into a church (excluding weddings and funerals) since I was at school.

The hymn originally written in Latin around the 12th century wasn’t translated into English until 1850 and basically repeats the story of the celebration of the saviour of the world Jesus Christ; if you are a Christian and believe the scripture connected to that individual faith path.

I don’t have any issues with faith in something greater than me per se, that’s logical and makes sense to me. The problem I have with religion, there are so many different one it would be impossible for them all whilst convincing with lots of members disciples, to be correct.

My thought was how we can be so strongly influenced as children by everything we are exposed to especially music.

My new lyric,

Stop the suffering stop the pain and Emmanuel might come again.

What the bloody hell are the City of London thinking. It has taken me two weeks to get my head around this latest travesty. Smithfield market closing after at least 850

years. Some texts reference trading at Smithfield as early as the 12th century.

The local authority voted on 24th November. 2024 to close the historic market and relocate traders to a 1 billion pound new site in Dagenham much to the dismay of family businesses trading at Smithfield for as long as they can remember.

My father was a livestock trader, my grandfather a butcher so my family have links to Smithfield and I can remember it being a special day when we got to go and see all the early morning action when the rest of the world was asleep.

Of course it comes down to money, the massive quadrangle of the market is millions and millions in prime City of London real estate.

I want to ask the question though, doesn’t the market really belong to the traders that breathe life into it every day?

I don’t think any local authority has the right to sell off their assets at the expense of the local people involved.

Some things are just worth more than money and I for one think Smithfield is one of them.

Where in the world can you go at 6am in the morning, have a pint with someone just finishing work and see custom farm yard interiors at the same time.

Smithfield attracts approximately 5 million visitors per year, I suppose the City of London think that will be more once they have turned it into another shopping, cinema, dining, experience centre development.

Like we need another one of those. There are shopping mall mausoleum developments all over the UK, real estate propositions none of the independent business owners can afford to rent already.

Stop. No more. Is there a petition for Smithfield?

I honestly don’t get it. The traders are going ballistic and it’s estimated several million people visit Smithfield every year. Surely there is a way to monetise this traffic instead of letting a 1000 years of hard fought for business and survival of the people slip away like it doesn’t matter.

I love London. I think it is up there with the best cities in the world. I love all it has to offer and don’t want to see any of our heritage and history cast aside. That said, I’d rather see Buckingham Palace go before Smithfield.

The cote D’azur has long been a firm favourite destination. I have been involved in film finance for over 20 years so have been lucky enough to visit Eden Roc, quite a few times over the last 35 years.

First things first, get ready for a wallet ectomy, this is the kind of place if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it. I met the son of the King of Sweden in the restroom.

Set on a high precipis above the Mediterranean Sea this Palladian style expansive villa is super impressive as you arrive and that’s just the back.

Be prepared to be transported into luxury in a whole new level from the gracious service, quiet ambience, casual cool charm and eye watering bills. They have a group of private secluded villas, like you’ll find at the Beverly Hills Hotel or the Pennisula Hotel Beverly Hills if you are looking to be completely incognito.

I returned this year for lunch with friends and just to give you an idea the French fries were €30.

The hotel shop is other worldly, don’t expect sunscreen and cigarettes, more like beautiful beach wear and shorts from Bamford and custom fragrances from Dior.

If you cannot think about a night in paradise rooms start in high season around €2500 per night, go for lunch, sip an orange juice on the terrace, and rub shoulders with the hui polough. I just got rates for a minimum two night stay in October when the weather is not super warm for €1300 per night in a traditional room, translates as the cheapest.

I would recommend anyone enjoying the ambience at Eden Roc even if it’s only for an afternoon, best time for celebrity spotting if that’s your thing; first week in May when the Cannes Film Festival takes over or the Monaco Grand Prix when getting a room is virtually impossible.

Discover more with hashtag #masterpiecehotels

Whilst the hotel doesn’t disclose it’s guest list ever and confidentiality is assured for all guests I have sunbathed next to Brad and Angelina.

Think Barbados is only for the super wealthy. My wife and I stayed at Butterfly Beach for two weeks in May, when the weather can be changeable, start of the hurricane season, the prices were very reasonable we love to be on the island but of late the west coast of the island where you’ll find the more famous hotels like The Royal Pavillion and Sandy Lane. are too expensive for us.

Butterfly beach is on the south side of the island, near Christchurch so not as easy access to Bridgetown, the west coast famous spots like Mullins Bar where you might spot a celebrity and the big new luxury shopping mall but the bus service is good and a definite experience, even if it takes a little longer. We like to take the bus. You really get to feel island life if you can handle no air conditioning.

The hotel is 3 star, clean and basic but better than a back packers joint. The staff are wonderful, it’s Barbados, if a little slow paced, American’s will find that wherever you go on the island.very relaxed and chilled.

The setting is absolutely spectacular for anyone who is willing to compromise on luxury accommodation to enjoy everything else spectacular Barbados offers.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis which worked perfectly. Sunbathing, beach walks, snorkeling water skiing all right there, we even spied an amazing beach cottage for rent next door if we want to return and do the same vacation on an even tighter budget.

I’ve visited Barbados a few times and stayed in self catering accommodation right through to 5 star and if you can get over the snobbery and convenience of where you are on the island Butterfly Beach hotel is a very special place where you get so

much more for your money.

If you are looking for night life, beach parties and busy vines swerve this spot. More of a quiet understated paradise.

The food was simple but perfectly satisfactory and the pool bar serves cocktails and sandwiches throughout the day. I am sure we will return again.

This dramatization is adapted from the book The Master of Disguise by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative Tony Mendez, and Joshuah Bearman's 2007 Wired article The Great Escape about the "Canadian Caper", in which Mendez led the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran, Iran, during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

The film stars Affleck as Mendez with Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, and John Goodman in supporting roles, and was released in North America to critical and commercial success on October 12, 2012. The film was produced by Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck, and George Clooney. The story of this rescue was also told in the 1981 television movie Escape from Iran: The Canadian Caper, directed by Lamont Johnson.

THE TITLE PUT ME OFF

This is a clever film. I delayed seeing it. The truth the title did put me off, now the very funny play on Argo in the movie, becoming Argo Fuck yourself has become a sort of catch phrase in our house.

The film did leave a lasting impression. I am usually turned off by this kind of retelling of political events particularly when it is a US movie recounting their own side of the story. Not so in this case. I think the way this film was crafted was full of integrity.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and went in not really knowing what to expect. It tells the story of an American CIA operative travelling to Iran to bring home 7 Americans, having escaped the US embassy in Tehran during the hostage crisis.

Based on a true story, the cover for the precarious mission is the making of fake movie named Argo. John Goodman and Alan Arkin play the movie mogul/producer types to a tee and their characters really give this film an edge.

I think the praise Ben Affleck received for this, not his directorial debut but the first widely released, (he directed Gone baby Gone starring Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris in 2007) was well deserved. It has been a long time since I was so affected by the last 20 minutes of a film I can tell you. The final scenes take you to a place you hope to never go, throw you around and then overwhelm you with all the warmth and raw emotion you go to the cinema to experience (even though I watched it on DVD). I cannot think of anyone who wouldn't enjoy this classic, brilliant piece of film making.
