As a vegan or vegetarian there aren’t many places outside London you can get decent plant based food on the go. Why? The McPlant burger from McDonalds introduced only as part of a test menu in 8 locations in the US back in 2021, then in 600 locations in Feb 2022 was dropped 6 months later was due to poor sales. It is still published as available in the UK, one of my only fast food go tos, something the family and I can enjoy together, quick, easy, tasty and on the go. When you are the plant based person who needs to be accommodated in the group it’s not always pretty when people are hungry and want what they want. McDonald’s and the Mc Plant has been a great option for us.

Except over the last few months it’s been hit and miss whether you can get it at my local McDonalds, and we’ve had to start driving further to other franchises in the hope of tracking one down.

I’ve even been unlucky enough to try three different locations in one day and been unsuccessful in ordering vegan or plant based takeaway.

The reason according to Plant Based News (link below) via the Sun newspaper is poor sales of the veggie vegan menu across the board.

Which I actually find really hard to believe considering all the climate action, extreme weather around the world and education about methane gas emitted by livestock being the number two contributor to planet warming. Do we all secretly just want to die whilst chowing down on a beef burger?

Depending on which study you read livestock methane production contributes between 12% and 17% of greenhouse gas emissions globally so even if compassion for animals and the moral questions that surround consumption of meat, you’d imagine more people are bright enough to not want to contribute to things getting any worse.

No one bought the McPlant burger or anything else on the test veggie vegan menu introduced as this was dropped completely in 2022. The fake news message about the climate put out by the current administration has affected consumers who prefer cow to plant.

Personally I know friends and family members unable to determine the difference when unsuspectingly presented with the McPlant as an alternative and have since converted.

My fear is that very soon even the McPlant won’t be available for veggies and vegans looking for a fast food fix.

So I am motivated to write this to all Big Mac lovers, who too profess to be animal lovers or even just friends of the earth to give the McPlant a try. It’s really great and I challenge anyone to say it actually tastes that different.

My efforts are not completely selfish, I do love animals that’s a given and care deeply about the way they are treated but I also don’t wish to have to drive miles to find a McDonalds that can sell me a McPlant burger.

Qudos to McDonalds for trying to create tasty food for us. Vegans or people who identify as plant based now make up about 3% of the population believe it or not and those working towards being meat free, 10%.

I hope a few more get their butts to McDonalds and try the McPlant because I do fear unless the take up improves, everyone like me who wants a McPlant from time to time is going to have to find their fast food fix elsewhere or we’ll all be reduced to eating just French fries, which are tasty but not quite the same as the McPlant meal now heading for extinction.

Fait Maison offers a set afternoon tea offering and an à la carte menu from renowned chef, creative director and owner, Yvonne Osman known as Om Waleed to followers and friends.

Few places look as pretty and inviting as Fait Maison. It has a great deal of curbside appeal located on Berkeley st just up from the 1 Hotel close to Green Park Tube and just off Berkeley Square when we turned up for a special occasion afternoon tea experience booked online at £35.00 per person plus compulsory 12.5% service charge we were made aware of when we booked.

When you get inside the Middle Eastern influence is apparent, the prices are extortionate the customers, when I visited were mainly ladies gracefully sipping tea. The food I thought a little underwhelming, we had the set afternoon tea offering billed as a luxury experience, finger sandwiches, a couple of cakes and a pot of tea and the bill was an eye watering £100.

Chef Om Waleed’s à la carte menu is a mix of omelettes, sandwiches, fresh salads and Spanish tortilla but it’s the decor of pinks and eggshell blues that provide the perfect setting for ladies in black to enjoy a graceful refined afternoon tea. It was presented absolutely beautifully on cakes stands and toile de jouy pottery.

The silk flowers on every table were a highlight, they looked really good except when you go to smell them you realise they are artificial. It is a bit like a set, all done for a great Instagram shot but not really that lux actually and get ready for 12.5% service charge to be added to your bill. For people who like to tip for excellent service they make the decision for you at Fait Maison, something that unashamedly is declared clearly on their website.

When we went the service was OK and we would have tipped 15-20% so they did themselves out of a nice gratuity from us. I’ve read reviews online from people that didn’t have the best experience, perhaps why they charge service as to be fair a lot of places do especially around Mayfair. I think you can ask for it to be removed but I wouldn’t fancy your chances getting out of there without bad feeling if you did that. I got the sense like in the US you’d be expected to explain yourself if you didn’t feel the service was up to scratch and could end up in a confrontation you wouldn’t have wished for.

We smiled, paid and left.

Would I return probably not but for me that would be more because the place is halal, I didn’t know that before I went and the vegetarian and vegan options were limited. Although Fait Maison do advise customers to inform them of dietary requirements at the time of booking something we didn’t actually do.

I think many people would get a great deal of pleasure from the visual experience and if you love taking pictures this is the perfect spot for that. I think it would be a great choice for a sweet sixteen tea party or younger people more excited about the visual than the food or service. Fait Maison offers theatre and a visual feast in prime London real estate venue, steps away from the Ritz Hotel on Piccadilly.

On 24th February 2026 MP Ester Mcvey introduced a 10 minute rule bill calling for clearer labelling on all halal and kosher meat with animal welfare at the heart of her parliamentary push which I support.

I Love The Charm of Ask Italian Stamford: A Taste of Authenticity in a Chain Restaurant

In the heart of Stamford, a picturesque town renowned for its historical architecture and vibrant cultural scene, lies a culinary gem that breaks the mould of typical chain dining experiences. Ask Italian Stamford stands out not only for its strategic location but for its remarkably unique approach to Italian cuisine, blending the efficiency of a chain restaurant with the charm of a home-cooked, family-run establishment.

One of the most captivating aspects of Ask Italian Stamford is its commitment to offering exceptional vegetarian and vegan options, which, according to many patrons, surpass the non-vegetarian choices in both taste and creativity. This focus on inclusive menu options is a refreshing shift in a dining world where vegetarians and vegans often find their choices to be an afterthought.

Culinary Delights that Keep You Coming Back

A standout dish that consistently receives rave reviews is the Spaghetti Arrabiata. Expertly prepared, this dish strikes the perfect balance between the spicy kick of chili and the rich, tangy sweetness of fresh tomatoes. It’s a simple dish, yet its execution at Ask Italian Stamford is nothing short of perfection, rivalling the authentic flavours one might experience in the heart of Italy. One of the challenges in the Midlands is finding fresh and healthy food and this spot in Stamford, as an American is somewhere I like return to.

Complementing the food menu is a selection of homemade beverages, with the pink lemonade being a particular highlight. Reminiscent of the refreshing, zest-filled lemonades found in the Southern United States, Ask Italian’s version is a wonderful nod to traditional American refreshments, yet it feels right at home alongside the Italian offerings. Think of sipping pink Lemonade in the South, sitting on a porch swing in balmy New Orleans, Louisiana, South Carolina or Georgia and you'll get the picture.

More Than Just a Meal

It isn’t just the main courses that draw diners back to Ask Italian Stamford. It's a lovely spacious airy restaurant with simple decor and furniture but cute touches in the art work and plants that make it feel more independent than generic and a chain. The restaurant has a knack for turning what could be ordinary side dishes into memorable culinary experiences. Take, for instance, their homemade focaccia. Warm, fluffy, and seasoned to perfection, this bread is a delight on its own or when dipped into the rich, flavourful, and "super tasty" balsamic vinegar provided – a real treat for both vegetarians and vegans.

Moreover, the tapenade served at Ask Italian is a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality and flavour. Rich, savoury, and packed with the deep, briny flavours of olives, it pairs wonderfully with the focaccia, creating a combination that is hard to resist. And something else I absolutely love about this restaurant chain is in every restuarnet you'll find a locally sourced and independent Gin. In Stamford it's Rutland Dry Gin, so the next time you order one of our signature cocktails, you’ll be supporting a local business.

It's A Place That Feels Like Home For Me, more international than a Pizza Hut or Pizza Express.

What sets Ask Italian Stamford apart from other chain restaurants is its atmosphere. There is an unmistakable warmth here, a conviviality that resonates from the staff to the layout of the tables. It’s this atmosphere, coupled with the high-quality, homemade offerings, that makes diners feel like they are stepping into a family-run Italian kitchen rather than a typical chain restaurant.

For those seeking a dining experience that combines the best of both worlds – the reliability and accessibility of a large chain restaurant, where you know what you are getting, think TGIF and the bespoke, thoughtful preparation of a family-run business – Ask Italian Stamford is a must-visit. Whether you're a steadfast vegetarian, a committed vegan, or simply a lover of fine Italian cooking, this restaurant promises not just a meal but a delightful culinary journey that will beckon you back, time and time again.

And not expensive for anyone on a budget.

England’s Grace St John’s Wood High St. Billed as an Australian eatery. I didn’t find it to be Aussie but I’ve only visited once so cannot really call myself an expert on Australian cuisine. I thought the menu would have a lot more variety and there would be more veggie options. I found Australians put great emphasis on fresh seasonal produce and the food is generally considered much healthier than American.

I was excited to try England’s Grace which I cannot believe has actually been open over two years. It’s been a while since I last went to Regents Park.

England's Grace in St. John's Wood opened on August 8, 2023. The restaurant, which serves a mix of Australian and European cuisine, is located at 64 St. John's Wood High Street where the famous Fego Cafe used to be. A very tough act to follow for locals and visitors alike. I spent a few years in North London as a student and when I moved back to the Midlands and no longer lived in London this particular Fego caffe held a special place in my heart, I absolutely loved it and was very sad when it closed in 2021 citing the Covid pandemic and rising rents as the reason in combination.

The new England’s Grace offers breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner options and always seemed busy whenever I've been in the neighbourhood so has definitely been on the radar to try. It has taken so long as I spend more time in the country than in London these days.

I may have just had a freak experience but when I recently took a table outside and checked out the menu, it says it’s a fusion of Australian and European cuisine the menu felt Middle Eastern to me, quite a few lamb dishes and definitely more meat than veggie options.

The crowd felt Arabian, Middle Eastern, women wearing scarves in the most part and men sipping strong coffee, tucking in

to abundant breakfasts. The air was scented by piping hot aromatic teas or creamy hot chocolate so when I scoured the menu for something lighter a salad, or granola and fruit it didn’t jump out and I felt under pressure to pick something. I ordered a mixed fruit juice to start with, after being told the pressed veg juice on the menu wasn’t available with a roll of the eye from the server which made me feel like I just wasn’t their customer I started to stare at the menu.

Even outside I could smell the grilled meats and kebabs clearly were their speciality.

The main courses were £20 plus and every one centred around a meat star. The juice I ordered cost £7.50. It's more of a high end restaurant than a casual dining experience. The waiters were dressed smartly in suits. The breakfasts being served were all about the meat and limited vegetarian options, OK if you like eggs or grilled halloumi.

There was a sweetcorn fritter which I think was plant based but just didn’t sound appealing.

When I said I was struggling with the menu it was snatched from me with no attempt made to modify something into a greener perhaps a bit healthier version.

They were very busy and everyone else seemed to be tucking in and enjoying the food so like I said it’s more of a meat eaters paradise.

They do have avocado on sourdough with feta which I could have taken off at £14.50 and an açai coconut bowl with banana and kiwi which sounded nice at £12 but most of the other breakfast items were all about the eggs or the labneh, a type of strained yogurt that’s a staple in the Middle East.

But it was the brusk service from a surly waiter and a 13.5% non discretionary service charge when as an American I am used to tipping that actually put me off ordering completely.

And I paid for my juice and left, I ended up eating elsewhere.

I will give England’s Grace another go, maybe the next time I am around the neighbourhood. The reviews online are good. And like I say it could have just been one of those days but maybe a name change for this restaurant is in order? Even though I didn’t have the best experience their customers on the day I visited, one of whom tutted when I mentioned the words “plant based” to the waiter definitely were enjoying the food.

I am so happy to see wildfarmed bread making it into the mainstream. This loaf I picked up at the local supermarket.

Small changes make a big difference the reason why I am always delighted and so encouraged to see a bakery brand like Wildfarmed going from strength to strength. I think how good would it be if everyone supported, not just for the individual health benefits but for the impact on biodiversity and the planet when we grow and eat these kind of wheat products.

It’s a fact Wildfarmed bread (traditionally only available in small batch bakeries sold at farmers markets) offers a more holistic approach to bread production, providing potential advantages for both individual health and the health of the planet.

As the planet heats up we the farmers do have to be more conscious about what we grow and how we grow it. Sustainable Farming Practices are becoming more and more important and "Wildfarmed" approaches involve regenerative farming, methods put soil health front and centre, minimize the using of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, promoting biodiversity. We know such practices reduce chemical runoff improving the overall health of the land and natural ecosystems.

When we support farms and manufacturers like Wildfarmed that favour sustainable practices and reduce transportation distances (by sourcing locally), "Wildfarmed" bread contributes to a lower carbon emissions and footprint compared to wide scale industrial bread production.

If we want to encourage biodiversity we have to support Small farms and smaller businesses employing "Wild farmed" principles and techniques, growing and cultivating a wider variety of crops and utilizing companion planting, a technique which strengthens biodiversity and our natural ecosystem’s resilience.

Farmers are struggling with grazing and land quality as temperatures rise. Wildfarmed practise uses and needs less water. Regenerative farming employed in a “Wildfarmed" approach and products made from the wheat produced, includes methods like cover crops and much more water-efficient irrigation which in turn reduces water usage and protects water quality.

All well and good I hear you say but what does it taste like.

I absolutely love this loaf, nutty, crunchy, wholesome. Makes a delicious Welsh Rarebit with loads of Worcester sauce (the only time I break down and eat cheese and I leave out the egg so you don’t get the soufflé rise,) can’t have everything.

Growing up I used to love love love thick white sliced bread, stacked double and toasted on the aga with lashings of anchor butter. So I understand if that’s your thing, lots of people like it or Warburtons wouldn’t be in business. It’s hard to give it up completely but maybe one loaf out of four, or even six give a Wildfarmed loaf a go.

You’ll be doing your body, the farmers trying hard to make the most of our natural resources and the small manufacturers who are buying the food we grow a big favour.

When you think about it, the good you are doing will make the bread taste even better.

Wildfarmed is available at Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado. If you don’t like brown bread try the delicious white sourdough at £4.

The seeded brown loaf I like is 600g and costs £4.00

It’s made using a traditional sourdough process, fermented over 32 hours with a 5-seed blend (Brown Linseeds, Golden Linseeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Poppy Seeds. Hand shaped and scored, then stonebaked it’s crusty with a soft, chewy middle and makes the best toast.

I love the Malin and Goetz strapline, “less but better” this moisturiser if you buy it costs £38 for 220ml and £65 for 443ml. A bit of a saving if you go for the bigger size. And it doesn’t smell really at all, kind of natural but not pungent in anyway so won’t conflict with your favourite fragrance. honestly cannot bear the thought of animals being subjected to product testing of any kind, I just don’t see why it’s necessary and the reason why I refuse to buy bleach. I’d prefer a few germs. And for my beauty products my first question is in regards to animal testing. Products that are PETA certified and for information any product with the leaping bunny symbol, it’s the globally recognised logoOr certification mark to show consumers any cosmetics, beauty or personal care products or household products that are not tested on animals.

Malin and Goetez is not sold in mainland China so they don’t have to comply with laws that force companies to test products on animals.

First hurdle over. I didn’t buy this moisturiser first of all it was in a hotel bathroom, the Morgans hotel group, Morgans Originals a small group of boutique independent hotels from London to Miami, including the Sanderson Hotel and St Martins Hotel in London and The Balfour Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida provide this range of skincare to their guests, a reason to book with them and I was grateful as I don’t really use body moisturiser at home on the farm in the Midlands, it’s only on holiday when exposure to sun and sea my skin does get really dry.

I don’t like to feel slimy or slippery after applying moisturiser. I like a product that soaks in immediately and whilst I am not a moisturiser expert this one I really liked for this exact reason.

It says it effectly hydrates and balances all skin types and I found this to be a true statement. I usually peel a bit after a week or so in the sunshine but not this time after slapping the Malin Goetz on each day.

Astra Agro Lestrari’s land grab in Central and West Sulawesi, Indonesia, backed by asset managers BlackRock is going on without the consent of the people that live there and what’s this got to do with San Pelligrino?

Fair to say I love a San Pelligrino Aranciata or Limonata, combo fruit juice and fizzy water, the closest thing you can get to a citron or orange presse in a can. And I am not stupid enough to think the brands we love and enjoy are all ethical or have B corporation credentials and credibility. Although I do try my best not to support or buy into anything when I discover what the companies behind the brands are up to, in this case American giant Nestle, who also own big product names like Nescafé instant coffee and Kitkat. There are loads of others we instantly recognise a list too long to cite here.

Chains of bad behaviour are often hard to follow and are smudged out by corporations when it comes to glossy marketing campaigns of products we love.

Imagine what we’d all think if when we saw an advert for San Pelligrino, instead of seeing a beautiful couple say sipping delicious iced cold drinks in an idyllic setting we saw the indigenous people of Central and West Sulawesi, Indonesia crying out against illegal land grabbing of local farm land and deforestation to make way for tens of thousands of acres of palm oil production, palm oil used in the manufacture of literally thousands of branded products we use every day purchased by companies like Nestle, Proctor and Gamble, Pepsi Co. Would we be so eager to buy these products and support this behaviour.

Not everyone is an activist, I get that, and I am not an active member of any organisation fighting for change like Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth but I do like to think I am open, curious and try to stay somewhat informed about what large corporations are up to.

And even though the activities of AAL in Indonesia do actually breach the corporate policies of a few of this massive corporations they still continue to trade with them.

SAN Pelligrino drinks don’t contain palm oil. I have already stopped eating things like Nutella and Kit Kats that do due to a passive awareness that Palm Oil production is a very unscrupulous business.

Now I’ve found out what Nestle the parent of San Pellegrino are up to I won’t be drinking it anymore.

I’ll be making my own limonata and aranciata instead. And when I am out and about and on the go I’ll stick to small batch produced fresh drinks instead.

The big boys, when you look deeper and follow the chain back to poor indigenous people trying to fight for their homelands against fund and asset managers like BlackRock who provide the investment for companies like AAL to do what they do it’s usually not very pretty.

I am sure I buy more things that I am unaware who are the people behind them, washing powder, air freshener, toothpaste but when I discover a brand like Colgate is part of the bigger global problem I eliminate.

We have so much power as consumers. If we stop buying what these companies produce for us in protest, what will they be forced to do, that’s right. They will have to change their ways. It’s only because we have no idea they get to carry on making money at any cost, something I just don’t agree with.

My San Pellegrino Aranciato enjoyment just isn’t worth it.

I was very happy to see a plant based brand Alpro team up with Tesco club card and Britains Got Talent Tour bus to bring an experiential marketing experience to Tesco customers celebrating 30 years of Tesco Club card and offering customers a chance to win tickets to the live semi final and grand final of Britains Got Talent from Tesco car parks around the country throughout May.

The tour around the UK for the ITV hit show staring Simon Cowell is visiting 18 Tesco stores, starting at the Tesco superstore in Windsor for one day only from 11am and will end at the Apollo Theatre London for The Britains Got Talent Live Final.

Normally a big thing like this in the Midlands would draw a crowd but I was struck by the lack of enthusiasm and people to be fair. I only snapped a quick picture, it was unusual to see the big bus parked with staff members doing their very best to engage the public and get something going. I was almost dragged in to spin the wheel with the promise of prizes galore for anyone brave enough to step over the threshold.

I think it is very telling, a sign of the times when even children cannot be encouraged to try and win tickets to the Britains Got Talent Final. I saw staff members approach every passer by and no one was remotely interested. It was a big set up with no energy, no excitement and absolutely no people.

I am not sure what Campaign agency N2O and Campaign Live could have done better to engage the public and market the tour but if the event in this Tesco is anything to go by heads are probably rolling already.

I am always pleased to see a non dairy brand like Alpro being presented as a tasty planet friendly cruelty free option to dairy products so this was good if people participate in other spots along the way. The full list of Tesco stores being visited in the next two weeks is listed in the link below: a local newspaper in Wales.

The only other online marketing the tour attracted was a few repeated articles in local syndicated newspapers but it didn’t make it into a national tabloid paper which I am sure would have been the goal for the shows brand advertising partners.

I think it’s a real reflection on the state of the general public and their state of mind, disillusioned by the power of big brand advertising.

I heard the pitch and even the promise of freebies, prizes and giveaways didn’t work this time.

It’s clear Tesco customers are suffering and it’s going I take more than a visit from the Britains Got Talent tour bus and a few Tesco club card points on offer to get something going.

I am as just glad it wasn’t me trying to pull people in. It was a flop and for the staff hired to be high energy and fun, a little bit embarrassing.

It may be a drop in viewing figures for the variety show hosting more and more acts for overseas than the UK, now in it’s 18th year that prompted the need for the investment from sponsors on this level; a full 3 week schedule to engage the public. In this case I don’t even think if Simon Cowell himself had stepped off the bus, accompanied by show hosts Ant and Dec, it would have made the slightest bit of difference.

It may just be time to come up with a new format ITV and give someone else a chance in the spotlight.

Fig and Rouge have been a vegan skincare trailblazer since 2006. I have been plant based for a long time and vegetarian for a longer time. I cannot buy skincare in the main lane, some say cruelty free but it’s a fact if a brand is sold in China it is tested on animals as it is required by law.

When I am searching for anything including a Hyaluronic vegan lip balm I do my research to find under the radar more sustainable brands like Pamela Anderson’s vegan skincare brand Sonsie, who don’t have the massive ranges or marketing budgets of a Rimmel or Maybelline who easily put their products under our noses with glamourous and expensive ad campaigns that scoot over the less fluffy issues of lengthening mascara on puppies (figuratively speaking you get where I am going)

I only discovered Fig and Rouge by accident, not in an ad campaign or interview, not in intentional print at all. I saw it in an image of the actress, Emma Watson at the beach. Knowing she’s a massive advocate for sustainability and vegan herself Emma Watson has spoken about her vegan lifestyle in Vogue and the reasons behind her choice, emphasizing her commitment to animal welfare and sustainable living, I was intrigued and noisy about the skincare in the background I didn’t recognise.

If you really care about ethical practise and avoiding chemicals and parabens on your skin you have to do your own research and be prepared to pay a bit more. The mail order skincare business Tropic has a great range and possibly the best known affordable vegan skincare brand thanks to the army of independent representatives who sell it Avon style.

The price point of Fig and Rouge is higher and I’ve only tried the lip repair balm so far. They have since had a rebrand with gorgeous new 100% recycled packaging. Sadly this lip balm has gone the same way.

I paid about £30 for Fig and Rough Hyaluronic acid smart lips activ hero balm HA+ and it’s absolutely incredible if you are lucky enough to find one.

_

The problem for me with most balms is the lips feel good while you are applying but once the balm wears off the lips feels dry again. Figs and Rough smart lips activ hero balm has the moisture trapping of hyaluronic acid, which does work better I think for a lasting improvement not just when applied.

My number one reason for writing this snoop is when I went to buy another one it’s been discontinued and I couldn’t find another replacement lip product from Figs and Rouge.

Lovely company, lovelier product that checks all my boxes on tackling the darker side of the beauty business. This time I have to buy Sonsie’s version unless Fig and Rouge have an alternative.

They are open Sunday through Thursday 9am - 10pm and Friday and Saturday 9am to 11pm.

Plant based people will understand this snoop. There is nothing more exciting for us to eat something absolutely delicious (that doesn’t taste plant based)

I know meat eaters and dairy eaters to some extent won’t get this. Plant based is sometimes a sacrifice especially eating out in restaurants as how tasty the food is depends on the skill of the chef.

The Lounges chain are one of the few big cafe restaurant brands that genuinely cater to vegans. And they are dog friendly providing water and treats for your pooch.

They have a plant menu that is as extensive as the regular menu and this hot dog was so good, certainly better than anything I’ve been served meat or non meat.

The dish consists of a Vegan Moving Mountains Hot Dog. Jumbo plant-based hot dog with vegan smoked cheese, bun served with vegan slaw and a side salad for £11.95.

We love to get our dogs out at the weekend and as the weather gets better we’ll often drive across to Bradgate Park where for the price of the parking (weekends and bank holidays included) there are some incredible of the beaten path places to walk, hike and explore.

Up until recently we’ve been going to the Griffin Inn in Swithland, a cashless establishment opened by two cricketers, Stuart Broad and Robert Gurney and going from strength to strength awarded Gastro pub of the year for Leicestershire, 2023, 2024

Except they’ve changed the menu and the two best things in my humble opinion are no longer available, the rainbow slaw and the Rocket and pesto salad.

So we switched things up and went to the Badgers Sett instead which is close by in the picturesque village of Cropston.

The setting was perfect. It was too cold to sit outside but there’s a massive beer garden with big umbrellas that looks inviting if the sun was shining.

The food is middle of the road at best. The menu, scampi and chips, burger and chips type faire. Plant based was a struggle, and the service haphazard even though it wasn’t busy.

The food is not gourmet or gastro. We were disappointed and the same price as other places in the area. We had two main course, chips, a drink each and the bill was £60.

We didn’t leave a tip.

Lovely country pub, great setting perfect for a drink and sit down. If you like a Toby carvery you might be alright with the food. If you have special dietary requirements or like a more a la carte dining experience this might be one to swerve.

The almonds are my favourites but a few different options to try all plant based.

Their are two types of vegan food, that made by non vegans, who cares if it tastes good, we’re not eating it and then the real McCoy, plant based food made by people who love food but love animals more.

I’ve put the Ocado link in as they are on sale there for £3. You can find them in the UK in Waitrose.

I’ve been back a few times and tried a few different options. They do plant based but I’d say it’s more Korean Barbeque.

There aren’t many places that offer a plant based base bowl and it should be good but everytime I’ve tried them not sure why but it just doesn’t hit the mark for me.

They do focus a lot of energy of the barbecue meats, the chicken and beef which is possibly what is appealing to most of the customers.

I don’t know if it’s the lack of flavour in the guacamole, the Asian pickle and vinegary flavours or the hoky chocolate cacao they have added for “extra health benefits”

It just didn’t come together for me. I tried their version of a green tea fruit smoothie and unfortunately I cannot rave about that either.

Is grounded kitchen healthy? I think it’s fundamentally a meat place.

For me because Grounded Kitchen is Halal it’s not “cruelty free” something I prefer to support if I can.

Going straight to the source often gets you amazing beautiful product, the type of product you are going to find in magnificent London/Edinburgh/Harrogate/Cotswolds flower stands and shops, only way cheaper.

I just bought £10 worth of flowers from a stall at the farmers market in Market Harborough. Met a lovely lady responsible for growing these stunning blooms.

Honestly when I returned to arrange them I had so many stems, in a florist shop they would have cost, maybe £3 a stem, 10 or 20 times the price.

So for my 10 pounds I got flowers for three rooms and a bunch left over for my neighbour.

The beauty of buying flowers from a farmers market the chances are they have been cut for a shorter period of time so will last longer.

Fen Flora do have an EBay shop if you cannot get to the farmers market held in the square on the first Thursday of every month.

I love to find out about people and independent and family run companies will small marketing budgets I haven’t heard of nor would ever likely to hear of unless I get out there and look.

Value, value, value when you shop Fen Flora at the farmers market.

Just mention, pak Choi, bean sprouts noodles, spring onions, sesame seeds you already feel like you are in a different country.

I lived in Australia for a while so when I came back to the UK the search for healthy food options was a struggle, vegetarian sure but completely plant based options are hard to find.

This spot is in the Great Western Arcade in Birmingham and I was attracted by the super colourful photographs inside.

It’s not all plant, they offer raw fish, salmon, sushi, but the principle is a bowl with a whole host of fruits, vegetables, and rice and then you just add the protein or not which was great for me.

I’ve visited Hawaii a couple of times and I am not sure where the connection is in terms of the food. Except I guess for the word Poke.

The idea I love though,

A five step bowl,

Base it, fill it, top it, dress it finish it.

When you fill it, for plant based they offer miso oyster mushrooms, or tofu (of which I am not a fan) but plenty of other substitutes and on the base there were a few options like quinoa if you don’t want sushi rice or brown rice.

Amazing to have found something out of the ordinary.

Really hope people support.

My friend took me to this place situated near Bradgate Park in Swithland, between villages of Cropston and Thurcaston, the drive alone on a crisp January day, the sun bouncing off the icy landscape was magical. The most picturesque visual through sprawling woodlands and that’s before we even arrived.

The buildings, a long barn like structure at the front is impressive, and as we entered we walked into a large atrium where there is an impressive bar and I noticed a beautiful dramatic lantern line stretching the length of the bar.

Adjacent to that a super cool looking outdoor area that would not be out of place in Aspen. Large wooden tables with comfy couches and fluffy blankets. It was too cold for us but amazing when things warm up a bit.

And talking of warming up, the bar area in the front, a series of cosy snugs all enjoying the warmth of roaring fires.

I am not surprised this spot has been awarded Leicestershire’s pub if the year; 2023 and 2024. So many things to like.

Even the menu, for me there were 2 plant based choices which is exceptional even though the offering is definitely meat focused, many of the sides were also vegan friendly.

We had 2 mains and two cocktails and the bill including the tip (service charge was not included) came to £60.

The food was good, the skin on fries definitely above average and the place was busy, which considering the temperature outside it was lovely to see a business thriving.

All in all a very good experience and I would definitely return. The only thing I would give a note on, my friend had booked a table but when we arrived there was a question over the booking which wasn’t handled in the best way and ended with her proving herself by finding an email. In their defence it was busy.

Which is possibly too why the service was a bit slow, took about 15 minutes to take the order and then it felt like quite a wait for the food, which thankfully was tasty.

One final thing I noticed was donations going to Rainbows Hospice a local children’s charity when anyone goes for the “Cricket Bat” there are two options, a meat one and a cheese one, for meat eaters and veggies they did look fantastic, antipasta, olives, artichokes, a whole host of delights.

FYI we didn’t get table 53, but if you like a fire it’s the best table in the house.

I love fresh healthy food, but I am not a food snob. I don’t have to shop in a particular store. I don’t believe I am defined by where I grocery shop.

I love fruit, my favourite food and any variation, a fruit salad and especially a fruit smoothie.

I am a loyal innocent customer, they are a B corporation and I like this about them. They make a kids smoothie lunch box pack, 4 in a box which I often by for around £3.50 £4.00.

They are available in my local coop.

Fast forward to Morrisons taking over the coop. I didn’t even notice I just went to the fridges where U usually find my smoothies and picked up a box.

I also didn’t notice the price £1.80 for the box of 4 smoothies. For me I get through two boxes a week so it’s a significant saving.

We drank the smoothies and really enjoyed them. No significant difference in taste, quality, texture or serving size.

Smoothie lovers out there the Morrisons offering is as good for half the price.

The only downside for me shopping with Morrisons as an ethical consumer they are partnered with Amazon where you can find the smoothies even cheaper. (Someone has to pay)

FYI they are vegan plant based.
