Description:

Although a devoted couple, empty nesters Kay and Arnold Soames (Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones) are in need of (in Kay's opinion) help to ignite the spark back into their marriage. For years they have slept in separate rooms, forgoing any physical affection. One day Kay (who works as a Coldwater Creek employee) tells Arnold (a partner in an Omaha accounting firm) she has paid for them to undergo a week of intense marriage counseling with Dr. Bernie Feld (Steve Carell) in a coastal resort town in Maine. Arnold, a creature of plodding, unimaginative routine, denies their marriage is in trouble and resists getting on a plane for a week of marriage therapy.

Hope Springs 2012 Review:

HOPE SPRINGS

Being a married woman myself I was rather worried about renting this DVD, as I thought it might be too real to face and I can say I was right. The movie is very well acted and very moving, although I wouldn't recommend watching it with your spouse especially if you are not getting along as well as you have in the past. Could be a bit bare knuckle.

The story follows a married couple who have been together for 31 years with grown up kids and a love that has grown apart. Meryl Streep plays the poor lonely sad wife of hard moody sexless Tommy Lee Jones and she decides they need to get sex therapy in order to get their marriage back on track.

The film is supposed to be a comedy but I have to say I did not laugh once, in fact I almost cried a few times, maybe because it was too close to the truth for most married couples. I really did enjoy it, it was very touching although I am very happy I did not watch this movie with my husband otherwise I may have been cringing a bit myself in my seat. Well worth renting alone with a big box of tissues, a big box of chocolates and maybe the number of a very good sex therapist.

Pros and Cons:

Pros: Refreshing script, very real
Cons: Not a comedy and very sad
