On paying the price for enjoying the fags

David Lynch

Movie lovers everywhere woke up to the news that Hollywood director, David Lynch best known for triumphs the cinematic genius of film classics like the Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, three of his many films I include on my top 25 movies of all time and let’s not forget the cult classic Twin Peaks.

He has said he has been diagnosed with emphysema a chronic lung condition, a worse version of COPD, which has left him housebound, at 78 unable to walk more than a few steps without running out of Oxygen. Having loved smoking all his life he says he quit 2 years ago but any further directing will have to be done remotely not on set.

He spoke about it being the price he has to pay for all his years enjoying smoking, total pragmatist, no feeling sorry for him self although for someone so vibrant and self sufficient it must be an extremely tough price to pay. I cannot stand it when I have a toothache.

Not sure how he will manage doing it all from home but I really hope we have not seen the last of him as a director.

I think smokers are always smokers even when if they give up. I had a twenty a day habit (40 a day on a night out) habit until I gave up smoking cigarettes, Dunhill Menthol or St Moritz I loved about twenty years ago but did still enjoy a roll up in the evening most days.

Then the UK government banned menthol cigarettes, another rant, for another day but hearing David’s story has certainly made me think about totally giving up something I too love, myself.

Just not today.
