The ultimate simple cover letter

The format for a cover letter is flexible but it doesn’t need to be long and there are some things you must make sure you include. Getting a new job can be a daunting task particularly if you are shy, get nervous meeting new people or tongue lied in pressurised situations. It helps to remember anyone conducting an interview is tasked with finding someone to do the job in question so they are not looking to catch you out or make things difficult for you. It’s their job to sell themselves, the company and the job to you in order to attract and secure the best talent.

Dear (name of recruiter or H.R. person)

Re: Trainee Welder Position

I attach my CV for your consideration for the above position with (name of company)

I am particularly interested in this position/This position caught my eye because (do your research and find something about the company that resonates with you and what you are hoping to achieve from your career in the future, read their website, join a forum, speak to people that work there) e.g. I really want to work for a company with a brand profile that is second to none like Massey Ferguson because I am interested in learning from the best in the industry. I have always been interested in tractors, having grown up on a farm and would love to expand on my welding apprenticeship with a top UK company.

I know I have the skills and enthusiasm to do this job and be an extremely successful team player within your organisation (tell the reader what they are and how they relate to the job description).

I very much hope I am selected for interview so I get the opportunity to meet with you and tell you in person why I am the right person for this job.

Yours sincerely,
[Your name]
