Married At First Sight

TV format for channel 4 from CPL Productions

Married At First Sight

I have to say when I watched the first couple of episodes and I was back in like a baby reconnecting with its blankie. Then I was thinking how when I first heard about this format I thought it was a joke, absolutely ridiculous, how no one in their right mind would ever marry a stranger. And to be fair telling the parents, extended family that participating individuals were taking the

Plunge in this highly unusual (desperate) way was a big part of the format before any wedding ceremonies happened. That was the jeopardy of the show, taking this big step and getting family and friends onboard.

Roll on 10 years (show launched in 2014) they’ve got more people signed up to be on it than they know what to do with, it’s as normal as anything to turnaround to a stranger or walk down the aisle to a stranger and we all tune in desperately waiting to see if the perfectly professionally matched pairs get their happy ever after ending.

This week we’ve met Ross and Sacha, a sex maniac and a celibate, Emma and Casper, Casper is attracted to slim and Emma is very curvy, Eve and Charlie, Charlie falls in love two quickly and is very needy, Eve is private, quiet and detached, and Adam and Polly, Adam likes petite brunettes and drop dead good looking, Polly is a curvy redhead.

So we’ve definitely seen fireworks this week, but it’s not my view for all the wrong reasons and I fear a more sinister motive may be at play than genuinely matching individuals by producers.

We all know men struggle to stay faithful even when they really fancy a woman, so to imagine anything will get off the ground without some physical connection in the beginning, is unrealistic.

As Emma earnestly said to Casper “if you didn’t like me in my gorgeous wedding gown or in my fabulous bikini, I don’t think there’s any hope.”

Adam told Polly’s best friend and confident Alfie she wasn’t his type, basically he didn’t fancy her. She of course was completely gutted and we ended up turning over we felt so bad for her.

I have an instinct, (read strong suspicion) the TV production company and I’ve done a bit of TV so I am not singling this one out, like the jeopardy and the media swarm caused by conflict a bit too much and certainly more than possibility of securing a real love match against all the odds.

Of course in the end these shows are all about money which doesn’t come without ratings but at the expense of the participants particularly the women, I am Not down with that.

It’s the women on the show who do tend to be kinder and more open to compromise, Kristina asked for a tall man but told Kieran at 5’ 5” he was 6 foot tall in her eyes because of his other qualities, although I do think this will be an issue down the road. If you like tall you like tall.

I think it’s pretty obvious now what casting have done which makes it painful and cruel watching for me. It’s not good TV watching someone with self esteem issues in the first place being told by their new husband or wife they don’t fancy them. Especially in the previous frame having told the relationship experts exactly what they are looking for physically.
