Who doesn’t love a Red Bull or Monster Energiser drink. I always have something like this close to hand especially if I’m pulling an all nighter?
I saw this display in my local supermarket, bought into LIVE FIT on the Point of sale and picked up a couple of cans of Celsius. They cost me £1.90. I tried the peach vibe, the sunset vibe for £1.90 each and I later bought the Guava Lime and Kiwi, not sure why, guess the can appealed and it tasted fine, not amazing, if you like Red Bull it’s going to give more watery and not so sweet. The sweeteners in there, even though it says nothing artificial are artificial. They use sucralose branded as Splenda, which I have to say didn’t give the diet drink after taste you get from say a Pepsi Max or a Diet Coke.
Where the Celsius drinks win out from a “healthy lifestyle” perspective is for the calorie counters. A standard Celsius energy drink has significantly fewer calories than a regular Red Bull or can of coke. A 12-ounce can of Celsius contains only 10 calories, while an 8.4-ounce can of original Red Bull contains 112 calories. But you can taste the difference.
The one thing you will notice after drinking a couple of cans of Celsius, I didn’t realise they recommend drinking only two cans per day because you are going to be flying off of the caffeine in these babies.
I don’t drink a lot of coffee or tea because I am prone to a migraine and the Celsius drinks delivered one major headache for me, three cans over two days. I drank the third can as a pick me up to try and alleviate the headache. It didn’t work.
It was so bad I had to look up what had caused it and here’s what I found out.
Celsius has significantly more caffeine than Coca-Cola, containing roughly six times the amount per standard serving. A standard 12 oz can of Celsius Energy Drink has 200 mg of caffeine, while a 12 oz serving of Coca-Cola only has about 34 mg.
Celsius has significantly more caffeine than Red Bull. A standard 12-ounce can of Celsius contains 200 mg of caffeine, while a small 8.4-ounce can of Red Bull contains only 80 mg. Even if you scale up the sizes, Celsius has more than double the caffeine punch.
In short, the drink tastes better for you and has way less calories than your typical supermarket energy drink but the caffeine is equivalent to downing 4 cups of coffee one after the other and if you live in coffee and or tea anyway you might find adding a couple of cans of Celsius will put you in a hypertensive state rather than the “Live Fit” marketing on the can.
It wasn’t for me, but if thou are a little bit addicted to the wired feeling caffeine produces you could find yourself exceeding the recommended daily allowance.
I say a little bit of the mark when it comes to labelling this product in the “health” category. Low calorie sure, but Red Bull tastes better and for me provides that happy medium caffeine injection.
Not sure Celsius will take off. Although if dental hygiene is a concern. This one won’t rot your teeth. It state clearly in the can it has a very high caffeine content along with 7 essential vitamins and minerals.
I guess you take the good with the bad when it comes to Celsius. Seems to me it’s about extremes. I am just not sure all that caffeine with zero calories is such a great combination.
For me the bad headache is as a warning.
