Barrys Gym Red Light High Intensity Fun and Fitness In The City Of London

Wonderful Environment to Blow Off Steam For Fitness Junkies

Barrys Gym Red Light High Intensity Fun and Fitness In The City Of London

Barry Gym is just like the City, perfect for driven individuals who like to work hard, get results, be the best. I like it because the people are friendly not snobby at all, there’s no look at me competition, everyone just gets on with it and the place is well maintained and well run. You get exactly what it says on the tin.

It’s a high intensity place boutique style gym with amazing facilities and classes catering mainly to 30 something professionals who want to get out of the office and push their fitness levels. What it’s not, sit in the sauna or jacuzzi for an hour and feel like you’ve done something.

So be aware Barry’s is not traditional gym with free access to equipment all day. It’s more of a boutique fitness studio focused on instructor led classes so you pay for an individual class £30 or for bulk classes 5-10 classes at a cheaper rate valid for 12 months.

Think instructor led classes rather than open-use gym space. It’s HIIT high intensity interval training in the signature Red Room, which is loud music dimly lit designed to motivate and push you and they combine treadmill running with strength and resistance work. It’s hard core work outs 50-60 minutes but really fun, it’s structured and scheduled, you book a slot rather than just turning up for general gym use.

I suggest going along a couple of times to try it and see if you like it before booking a course. The instructors cue the music and guide you through the exercises which change daily targeting different muscle groups so if you can handle more than a couple of times a week you don’t get bored.

There’s no relaxation area, no pool, sauna steam or jacuzzi it’s not that kind of place. You get nice changing area with lockers, hot showers free towels and basic toiletries. I take my own. There is a fuel bar serving drinks and snacks but again I tend to take my own water and eat lunch elsewhere. More of an in, do it and leave type place. Most people only have the hour for class.

You book your slot via the website or on the Barry’s app. They also have a location in Soho and you can visit either if you have booked a course of classes.

Be aware if you book a class don’t cancel and don’t turn up you will be charged.

If you get really into it you can have a monthly rolling membership for 8, 12, 16 or 30 classes per month. I haven’t got to this level yet, twice a week and then once the next week is the best I’ve done, 6 in a month so cheaper to book in blocks for me.

Standard opening hours in the city are

Monday–Thursday: 05:30 – 21:15

Friday: 05:30 – 20:15

Saturday–Sunday: 08:15 – 14:15

Class schedules do vary week to week within these times.

Barry’s is a work out experience more than a traditional Gym membership. When you go you’re participating so it’s not for slackers.

I’d say it’s not for beginner level fitness, if you are a runner like me or a cyclist it’s great instructor led interval strength training indoors.

Get ready to sweat. When you’ve completed you first class you’ll feel exhausted but beware Barry’s is a little bit addictive.
