Music lovers sustainable alternative to tampons and pads

For anyone looking for a more sustainable time of the month, Voila. Yes it looks like some contraption from a 1950s medical junk shop. Not the nicest thing to look at but this one is almost 15 years old. When I bought it, it was white. The rubber like substance, silicone I think it’s made from has just discoloured over time. By using a menstral cup over the course of our lifetime we can save about 11,000 tampons or pads going to landfill. Makes me pretty happy when I think about this. How infinitesimal increments add up to big change.

I decided to write this because a friend mentioned yesterday her teenage daughters were a bit freaked out by the thought of tampons.

I was at a festival quite a few years ago now, Coachella out in the desert in California and these were on sale. The Mooncup. It was explained back then as the cheaper more sustainable, paper free solution for that hideous thing we ladies deal with every month.

My American friends were gung ho so I went for it. And I am still using it every month.

How does it work. Well you squish the sides together and insert it into your vagina, I know it does take a bit of getting the hang of but once it’s in you honestly cannot feel a thing, just like an inserted tampon.

The benefits for me, on heavy flow days you don’t get the gushes. Very rarely do you get any leakage at all. And to empty, you just grab the sticking out bit at the bottom of the cup. Empty, wash it and replace.

I never changed back and this has been my solution since. I’ve never bought another tampon or pad and I feel good the positive impact on the environment my choice has made.

The moon up comes in it’s own little drawstring linen bag to store it and keep it clean between uses.
