I don’t read the paper anymore. I worry that journalists don’t fact check anymore and newspaper editors are more focused on advertisers than news.
I heard a couple of years ago the government were selling off Channel 4 news. Not sure what’s going on with that. The government in Jan 23 said Channel 4 was staying in public ownership.
The one good thing we are not selling off. An absolutely fantastic team, Krishnan Guru Murphy, Matt Frei, Helia Ebrahimi, Jackie Long, Darshna Soni, Ayshah Tull, Alex Thompson. It doesn’t matter who is presenting I watch with interest to see how the stories unfold as even though Channel 4 news team I think are the best and most trustworthy, I do understand the invisible news editor at the top is the person who ultimately decides which stories air which stories don’t and most importantly for me which stories get followed up on.
I am a big fan of the team a loyalty which began watching Jon Snow who even though I didn’t always agree with his point of view when interviewing (he could be a stick in the mud) I respect his integrity and work ethic.
I love it the team is top heavy, more women than men, led by the fiddling heroine that is Cathy Newman, I’ll never forget her chupzpah when running around Zimbabwe and South Africa, chasing down and bringing down John Smyth and interviewing the then Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. I remember watching from the couch being so grateful for women like her and thinking not sure I would have the guts to do that.
Over the last month a story that came to light in Damascus Syria when the Basher Al Assad regime fell, the largest mass grave ever an estimated 150,000 bodies has not yet been followed up on.
A think Mrs Assad’s desire to get divorced and return to the UK a transparent divergence in the story and not remotely news worthy considering the magnitude of exactly what has happened.
Please can we have follow up Channel 4. What are the UK government doing about this? What’s happening around the world in light of this travesty.
