Who doesn’t love a ploughman’s and a pint in a country pub warming up by a roaring fire after a brisk walk?

My brother and I had lunch at the Three Swans. It’s had a make over in the last few years and a friend had told me the outdoor court yard adjacent to the bar was really great vibes. I think it must have been in the summer as I didn’t see heaters or blankets.

We ate inside in the bar at the back. There isn’t a separate restaurant. The old fashioned pub part is the snug at the front on the street.

The makeover is corporate. Perfectly adequate but I did wonder if some of the old world charm had been lost in the process.

The staff were friendly and attentive. It wasn’t massively busy which may have been an indication about the food during the busier holiday period.

The food was disappointing. I ordered the bangers and mash and the mash was lumpy and stone cold in the middle making me suspect the microwave.

The jalapeño poppers weren’t fantastic either and the red pepper hummus dish my brother ordered was exactly that a big bowl of red pepper hummus which could have come out of a supermarket plastic tub.

It’s the type of hotel that has printed marketing on the tables selling 2 for 1 special desserts or cocktail lists with pictures and umbrellas.

Would be a good central venue for an event as they have meeting rooms and conference facilities at the back. Not sure we’d go again for food without a complete menu rethink.
