The Hot Potato

The Hot Potato

This British film is a throwback to the crime caper films that were popular in the 1960s and pays homage to several of these, including The Italian Job.

One evening of 1969, a Ministry of Defence's facility in London is completely destroyed by a huge explosion. To their surprise, Danny (Jack Huston) and Kenny (Ray Winstone) come into possession of a strange object from the blast; a large lump of solid Uranium which looks remakably like a hot potato.

The pair quickly learn of their find's potentional worth as well as its radioactive dangers. With the aid of Danny's girlfriend, Carole (Lois Winstone) the three set off on an adventure, dodging police and other sinister criminals also on the hunt for this prized find.

WINSTONE RARELY DISAPPOINTS

I rented this one the old fashioned way, a DVD from Blockbuster on a Saturday night. The girl behind the counter says "Ray Winstone doesn't do a bad one" "So long as he keeps his clothes on"

The film didn't disappoint. It was fast paced and stylish, good tunes, and Winstone is devilish charm in 60's rogue. He plays this type so well even in a suede fronted cardigan, my Dad had one of them and a hot wife played by Louise Redknapp, she held her own opposite Winstone in some semi steamy scenes.

Suzy loved the film too and she doesn't usually do the gangster type film. This is classic British 60s caper set in East London, very funny as the unusual trio of Winstone, (Kenny) his friend Danny and Danny's girlfiend Carole who doubles up as Kenny's receptionist venture all over Europe trying to off load a lump of Uranium hence the name, Hot Potato.

Great light and funny film with sublty. It flew by for me. And I'd definitely watch again.
