Oxford St Closed To Cars Disrupts Things For Shoppers In A Struggling Market For Retail

Everywhere is deserted in London. Is it because they’ve closed down Oxford St

Every Eighty Years We Have A Reset. Sadiq Khan says closing Oxford St to motorists will spark the end of the decline.

and for me it couldn’t come soon enough. Except I don’t think this is the way. Making it harder and less convenient for people to access where they want to access for me is a mistake and will keep me at home. Older people like the convenience of cars and taxis. Public transport and hopping on and off bikes is great for the young but they don’t have the disposable income.

When are people, especially drivers in London going to be able to get out and about again, start having fun and spending money.

I like shopping as a pastime, I like a day out in the west end, meandering up and down New Bond Street, visiting my favourite shops, saying hello to the assistants and retail staff I know who are always happy to see me. And yet more and more their faces are glum and I feel pressure to shop just to get the tills ringing again.

Everyone is hoping and praying things will pick up for Christmas. N.Peal a shop I like to pop into sells jumpers and socks, the next two months are typically their best yet when I was last in there a week ago it was just me and my god daughter.

They’ve finally done it. Oxford St close by is now completely closed to traffic which for someone who uses their car to get around, park and shop in central London it will cause me a massive headache and probably stop me going and supporting the shops I actually like to visit, I’ve got the parking sussed out on Maddox St, where I can usually guarantee a Saturday morning space but to get there I have to cross Oxford St, I also drive to Selfridges which I think will be a no go zone now.

I usually park on Edward Mews behind 400 Oxford St off Duke St Orchard St, but with the new restrictions I am not sure if I can still get there too.

I cannot stand all these restrictions for drivers and shoppers in London. Like it’s not dead enough for retail. I was in a big department store just last Saturday and I was literally the only person in there.

First it was the 20 miles per hour ruining life for black cab drivers, then all the e-bikes on every street corner which never seen to be in use. All the parking around Berkley Square has been forsaken for these dirty contraptions. I know the benefit for the environment, I do see men in suits zipping around in them from time to time but do stylish women use them. It seems to me jumping in an e bike instead of into a taxi in heels, make up and a lovely outfit, isn’t the least bit practical on your way to a business meeting, lunch or dinner.

Personally if we are going to get business moving and people shopping, eating and having fun in the capital one restriction after another isn’t going to do that.

Places are already closing down, the Stella McCartney store went and Aspreys. The Miu Miu store on the corner lot since 2010 have had a big refurbishment with Prada parent company purchasing the site for £250 million instead of leasing and reporting good growth globally. Not sure how the London flagship shop is actually doing, I’ve been in with my God daughter, she likes the brand and it always seems dead to me. The store assistants tell me there just aren’t the visitors, tourists and shoppers who spend anymore, more people walking around, checking things out, snapping a few pictures than actually shopping.

So the driving and parking thing is a problem for people who like convenience.

And if they make it any more difficult for me, I won’t be enjoying my once a week Saturday shopping trip anymore either.
