Katherine Ryan at The London Palladium

Funny Girl to Battleaxe sold out show

Katherine Ryan at The London Palladium

Making it in comedy is not easy. I cannot remember the last time there was a lady comedienne at the height of her career performing to sold out crowds in London at the London Palladium no less.

There was French and Saunders and Victoria Wood, Julie Walter’s Mrs overall is iconic but since then there was the good looking girl with dark hair, an impressionist on Britains got talent whose name I am going to have to look up, I didn’t I want to say Fran somebody (maybe I am getting confused with actress Fran Dresser, she looks a bit like her but I digress. Oh and the hilarious bafta winning Irish comedienne Aisling Bea guest host of hit show Have I Got News for You then all of a sudden there’s Catherine Ryan, the Canadian import who appeared on our screens in the UK in 2012 in Jimmy Carrs show 8 out of ten cats on channel 4.

In 12 short years she’s gone from a guest appearance on Channel 4 to headlining her own show at the iconic London Palladium.

I haven’t seen the show yet, it was sold out on 11th April when I took this picture. The next dates available are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd May. The tickets start at £30 up to £47 which seems very reasonable to me for a westend show in an iconic theatre like the London Palladium.

I love stand up comedy more than any other kind of live theatre, I love a heckler too and I think Katheryn Ryan is very funny indeed.

Her cutting, brutal matter of fact comedic style is very brave and she plays dead pan, stoney faced better than anyone.

I remember laughing so hard when Katherine Ryan played the “send to all” game on Michael McIntyres Big Game Show. Blooming hilarious.

The one thing that spoils the performance for me is Katherine Ryan face fillers, indulgence of Botox, face fillers, lip enhancements and the like. First off before you all go mad as a woman supporting a woman here, sharing and pitching her show, I believe she can do what she likes to her face, that’s her business. For me as fan though and I am a big fan because her comedy initially was all around navigating life as a single Mum and being brutal about the pitfalls of relationships it was a little bit contradictory to the intention of the comedy to have so much stuff put in your face to puff it out. Why? You’re so beautiful and gifted I wanted to shout. I guess I just don’t get it.

Katherine Ryan does so much with her face in her comedy I fear soon she won’t be able to move her face at all and for me that would be a great shame.

I honestly don’t want her to go from Funny girl to Battleaxe for real. For me it was the saddest part about another genius comedienne Joan Rivers. Maybe these super talented brave funny women we admire for saying the things we dare not say do have an Achilles heel after all.
