Laura's picture-perfect life starts to unravel when her son brings home a new girlfriend named Cherry. You can tell instantly that Laura played by the amazing Robin Wright is not happy by her perfect son Daniel's choice of girlfriend. She becomes convinced lively Cherry is a manipulative social climber -- or is Laura just being a over paranoid mother? Laura's picture-perfect life unravels when her son becomes infatuated by the new girlfriend Cherry. This is an amazing fast paced phycological thriller with incredible acting from the cast. It is the binge of all binge watches and I watched all six episodes in one go. The four main characters hook you in to their family life with perfect precision, as you the dynamics between them slowly unfold. The cast is as follows.
Robin Wright as Laura Sanderson
Olivia Cooke as Cherry Laine
Laurie Davidson as Daniel "Danny" Sanderson
Waleed Zuaiter as Howard Sanderson.
The girlfriend is the perfect balance between the love of a mother and the love of a girlfriend both driven by manipulation to win his affection. Based on Michelle Frances’ 2017 novel of the same name, and adapted for television by Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon — The series follows a unhealthy almost creepy mother-son relationship that gets out of control as soon as the son’s new girlfriend turns up. At the start, the series is some what predictable for this type of psychological thriller, seen it all before, comes to mind. However, halfway through, it takes an unexpected turn, forcing you to question everything you first thought would happen. The many twists begin to unfold a series of sinister and shocking events, escalating the dynamic between Laura and Cherry, with Daniel caught in the middle of their twisted escapades.
A shocking and uncomfortable story about manipulation, control and jealousy. The series is a fast, thrilling rollercoaster ride from start to finish with its even more uncomfortable conclusion. I absolutely loved it because it was real and gave the viewer a deep unsettling look at the human condition. 5 stars from me. A must watch.
