Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge!, is a 2001 Australian-American romantic jukebox musical film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. It tells the story of a young English poet/writer, Christian (Ewan MacGregor), who falls in love with the terminally-ill star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). It uses the musical setting of the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, France. At the 74th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Nicole Kidman, winning two: for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. It was the first musical nominated for Best Picture in 10 years, following Disney's Beauty and the Beast

FILMS LIKE THIS COME ROUND ONLY WORTH IN A WHILE

This theatrical extravaganza from Director Baz Luhrmann, staring Nicole Kidman as a Parisian courtesan, Ewan Mcgregor as her lowly writer love interest and Jim Broadbent playing a blinder as Harry Zigler the head honcho at the Moulin Rouge makes this a film a timeless classic of colour and musical magic.

This Oscar winner, Best Set and Best Costumes , Catherine Martin took the only statues for the film, nominated in pretty much every category and for me her work absolutely makes the film. The sets and the outrageous scale of them suck you in, so artistically imaginative and sumptuous like something I’ve never seen before. I absolutely loved the costumes too, they brought the whole film to life.

I have watched this film a lot and I see something new every time. It doesn’t matter you already know the story for this one, the music, (a musical set in the early 1900’s using modern tracks, which sounds bizarre I know but totally works), the humour, the script and spectacular performances from Kidman and Broadbent, Jim Broadbent was not nominated for Moulin Rouge but took the Oscar for his role in Iris, Kidman pipped at the post by Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball.

This is a wonderful film experience, anyone with a creative eye for fashion, style, décor chic will appreciate. I think it is an amazing out of the box movie making it an absolute work of art.
