AN UN ROMANIC COMEDY ROMANTIC COMEDY

Not a romanic comedy I hear you cry. I know I'm afraid of them too, when I think of movies like What a Girl Wants, Colin Firth and Amanada Bynes, sickly and cheesy I come up in a rash and I avoid anything with Jennifer Aniston in it for that self same reason.

Why I was so surprised by One Day which is funny, check, well acted, check apart from Anne Hathaway's Brit accent which vacillates between broad Yorkshire and plumby southerner, good script, check and no boy meets girl unrealistic ending, hooray.

The story is about an unrequited love affair on Hathaway's part with a spoilt rich kid brat, Dexter played brilliantly by Jim Sturgess. I guess most girls can related to falling for someone who treats you like shit at some point in their lives.

Anne is quite good at saving herself the complete humiliation of loving a loser as she continues to let him go on his miserable way, year after year to stop herself being dragged under by his selfish ways. Even his Mum dying of cancer, played by the brilliant Patricia Clarkson does little to bring him to his senses but does add depth to the characters in the film.

This film was thoroughly enjoyable, light, unpredictable and more real life than most romantic comedies, usually all fluff and no substance, I suppose that's why I liked it so much.
