Keeping Mum
Charlie Black 1973

Keeping Mum

Niall Johnson's comedy Keeping Mum concerns the family of a vicar who are beset by a variety of problems. Reverend Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson) is a well-meaning but hapless religious figure in his town. His son, Petey, is a wimp, forever terrorized at school. His daughter, Holly, enjoys the company of a variety of different boyfriends. Wife Gloria (Kristin Scott Thomas) has had enough of her husband and is considering leaving him for a golf teacher (Patrick Swayze). The family starts to come back together after hiring housekeeper Grace (Maggie Smith), a woman who knows a thing or two about keeping secrets.

FRESH FRESH FRESH

How did I miss this classic British film boasting an all star cast when it was released in 2005. It was on Channel 4 last night and it was a complete fluke I watched it as I like to see film continuously without all the ads.

The best things about this movie,

-really funny black comedy

-great acting from Kristen Scott Thomas, Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith,

-Patrick Swayze like you have NEVER seen him before.

The plot centres around Walter and Gloria (Atkinson and Scott Thomas) the vicar and his wife living in a small English picturesque parish of Little Wallop, population 57.

Their domestic bliss is not all as it might seem as the Vicar, Walter struggles with a mid life crisis and Gloria dallies with her golf pro, Swayze, whilst trying to tame her sex crazed 17 year old daughter (Tamsin Egerton) and protect her teenage son from school bullies. That is until Grace Hawkins (Maggie Smith) arrives to take up the post of housekeeper and sort them all out.

No spoilers here, but it is how she does it that makes this film.

I would definitely watch this again. I really really really enjoyed it even suffering the TV ads.
