The first time I went to Wimbledon was in 1985 and I went every year after that for 10 years never having any problems getting a ticket.
I moved abroad in 1995 and didn’t return to the UK for 10 years. As soon as I returned I began submitting my ballot entries.
Yesterday when I watched the ladies quarter final between J Polini and Emma Navarro on Centre Court (on TV) I couldn’t believe they were playing to an empty house. I had to have a rant.
I am not sure why everyone accepts it’s impossible to get a ticket. I heard yesterday if you were in the grounds the turnout was so poor they were letting people into centre court for free.
I am a genuine tennis fan desperate to watch in
person, happy to pay, but not wishing to stand in a queue from 3am to get a seat. I want to plan ahead, get dressed up, eat, drink, shop and enjoy my first love tennis and my second a great day out.
Be careful Wimbledon, when you haven’t got anyone coming anymore you might just find your loyal supporters are not so loyal anymore.
