  1. Mr. Nice

    Mr. Nice

brilliant brilliant film based on a true story of Howard Marks

Rhys Ifans and Chloe Sevigny star in the thrilling true life story of Howard Marks: school teacher and international drug smuggler.

Howard Marks's story is a lasting part of hippie folklore. At one time, the world's then most wanted man had 43 aliases, 89 phone lines and 25 registered companies. Thanks to the technical brilliance of his networking skills, it was estimated that he was trafficking as much as a tenth of all the marijuana smoked in the world. But this is only half the story. Intimately involved throughout was Marks's wife Judy. Judy, played by Chloe Segnivvy in the 2010 film Mr. Nice, was already involved in the hippie drug underworld before she met Howard. Her sister Natasha became a smuggler and served time for it in Mexico, while her eldest brother Patrick was involved in a number of scams himself and eventually became, among other things, Howard's accountant and money-launderer. Rather than the shrinking wife at home, Judy was involved with the drug-running scams and often acted as money courier and go-between abroad when Howard was stuck without a passport or identity. As if his absences were not difficult enough for the family, Judy spent eighteen months in jail herself. From living the high life hobnobbing with movie stars and euro trash to mixing it with the IRA and CIA, then the long, increasingly desperate years on the run, Mr. Nice is about the exhilaration of their criminal life and the hell of not knowing what's happening when your husband stops telling you the truth and your life is steaming out of control. It is a love story, very funny in parts and together Judy and Howard come across like a hippie Bonnie and Clyde. Far more than a retelling of Howard's story, this is a warm, extraordinary story of a husband-and-wife double act that spanned over three decades.

  12. Tobacco Dock

    Tobacco Dock

TOBACCO DOCK HAS BEEN AT THE CENTRE OF HOSTING ALL MANNER OF COMMODITIES FOR OVER TWO CENTURIES – FROM LUXURY IMPORTS TO TECH SYMPOSIUMS. THE LISTED TIMBERS AND CURVED BRICK VAULTS HAVE WITNESSED TRADE DEALS, TIGER ATTACKS, SLEEP DEPRIVATION CHALLENGES AND VICTORIAN TASTING DAYS NOT TO MENTION WORLD-CLASS CONFERENCES AND EVENTS.

    WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Tobacco Dock was completed in 1812, designed by John Rennie (who was also the architect behind the pre-1970 London Bridge). Today’s Tobacco Dock, while still generous in scope is just two-fifths of the original 70-acre site. That’s the same area as 40 football pitches. A high wall was constructed around the perimeter to protect the valuable goods from light-fingered thieves and remains in place to this day.

The distinctive subterranean barrel arched vaults are believed to have been built by prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars and were used to store all manner of goods which had been brought to London from across the world.

As you might guess from the name, one of the main commodities that were stored here was tobacco, brought over from Virginia. It was also used to store wool from Australia, rum, wine, molasses, brandy and animal skins. At full capacity, the Great Tobacco Warehouse could accommodate 24,000 hogsheads of tobacco.
