I didn’t think anything would get me buying a L’Oreal product again. It was 2008, and it wasn’t just me outraged. L'Oréal Paris faced significant controversy over a Feria hair colour advertisement featuring Beyoncé, with critics and consumers alleging the company had "whitewashed" her by digitally lightening her skin tone and hair. It was a white Beyoncé we saw in the ad that appeared in Elle magazine.
I remember thinking that’s Beyoncé except she’s white.
I decided I didn’t want to support a brand that did that an aside from the occasional Kerastase hair care purchase, (owned by L’Oreal) I stuck to it. Until now.
My brilliant hair stylist at Studio 66 in St John’s Wood used it recently. I was short on time and wasn’t able to get my regular roots done. He didn’t ask me if I wanted to try it, just with a flick of the wrist, that took less than a second it was done and my visible white root miraculously disappeared as quickly as him, he was onto his next client. I didn’t even get a chance to ask what it was just remembered the striking turquoise container.
When I began my research it popped up immediately and my 20 year brand boycott came to an abrupt end. I purchased a container at £9.99 from Superdrug which will give me 25 applications.
Now a warm brunette I checked the colour matching online and I went for Brown thinking Dark Brown would be too dark however Brown does come out a little too light and a little too red for me so next time I’ll be going for Dark Brown.
Brown matches more to chestnut or Bronde colour hair if that helps. If you are a definite brunette even with some lighter tones, how I’d describe my hair you need the Dark Brown.
Questions I had were;
Does it wash out? Yes, it is temporary and washes out easily with shampoo.
Can I use it on hair that is already colored? Yes, it is designed to blend with salon-colored hair, as explained, I get my hair coloured every three to four weeks. This is great for inbetween colour appointments.
How long does it last? The spray is intended for temporary use some sites say daily use but I have found it lasts until my next wash.
It literally takes a second to apply and no need to reapply, it stays until your next wash. I have also tried the Wow powder in the past which is great, but this is quicker, much easier to apply. Like I said it takes less than a second. One quick squirt and you are done.
If you need Instant Root concealer spray I have not ever seen anything better than this. Whilst I am not aware of any more whitewashing the only downside for me, L’Oreal as a company are not yet cruelty free.
