There are certain Parisian addresses that seem to hum with quiet significance, as though the stones themselves have absorbed centuries of ideas, arguments, beauty, and change. Solférino Paris is one such name—less a place than a state of mind.
I didn’t expect to find this state of mind on a busy afternoon at Selfridges Birmingham. After stopping for lunch, I made the mistake of wandering through the beauty section, which now completely dominates the store. Before I knew it, I was under siege—attacked and over-sprayed by over-eager fragrance sales assistants trying to push the loudest, trendiest bottles onto my skin. My senses were entirely overwhelmed until I met Rashied. A delightful, unexpected smart young man who knew his perfumes like the back of his hand.
Rashied was the complete antithesis of the beauty hall chaos. He didn't push a product; instead, he took the time to truly listen and learn about me, my taste, and what I value in a scent. Recognizing that my nose was fatigued, he gently reset my senses by having me smell coffee beans to clear my palate. Only then did he introduce me to N°7 from the Solférino range. With a single, gentle spray, I was completely sold.N°7 (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) captures that exact poetic, intellectual hum I always look for. It opens with a beautifully crisp, clean breath of neroli, but quickly evolves into something deeply comforting, intellectual, and sophisticated—a stunning blend of smooth chestnut, powdery iris, and a warm, woody base. It doesn’t shout for attention. Instead, it sits close to the skin like a personal, luxurious secret.
I could still smell the perfume this morning which is always a good sign to me that its worth the money. I decided to purchase the 50 mil bottle at £140 but they do a bigger bottle which is probably better value. The packaging is simple and stylish just how I like things and if you opt for the bigger bottle at £240 80 mils they will personalise the packaging for you.
If you are tired of the aggressive "perfume wall of sound" and want a fragrance that tells a story of understated elegance, seek out Solférino. And if you are in Birmingham, do yourself a massive favour and ask for Rashied—he understands that fragrance is an emotional journey, not just a retail transaction.
