Usually when I end up in Mayfair after work it’s down the pub. The coach and horses a firm family favourite off Berkeley Square, the oldest pub is currently closed for refurbishment so we’ve been going to the Punchbowl and sometimes the Red Lion down from the Ritz which is a bit of a walk from Berkley Square but a great little pub with a really fun, sometimes a bit rowdy crowd if you’ve never been.
The other night it started to hail, everyone outside darted inside and we decided to try somewhere new. I’d read about this random place underneath, in the basement of The Farm Shop on St Audley St about a 2 minute walk from the Punchbowl.
You’d never even know it was there if you’d never been, a wine cellar under a deli effectively but on Friday night they play live music and the wine selection in wall lined cabinets was pretty impressive.
We felt a little bit liked we’d stepped into an underground dissident art cafe in Eastern Europe in the 1960s it made me think about a book Laughter and Forgetting I’d read in High School. The only thing missing was plumes of smoke rising into the air. We went outside to smoke, not me, my friends.
The beauty of this place, we could have been anywhere in the world, on one wall, fantastic art work on another a charcuterie cabinet. The customers were mixed, old locals and young and artsy.
We fitted in in our city suits, last orders at 10pm. Which was fine, we’d been in the pub since five.
During the day it’s a restaurant and you can eat dinner if you want. Most people were enjoying the music, the wine the rotisserie chicken an house speciality and a few tapas style bites here and there.
They also show a collection of art which apparently changes each time you go to help artists get there work seen and exposed to a wider audience which was pretty cool and really adds to the space.
It’s table service so no bar even though they call it a wine bar but if you want a place after the pub that’s cool and a little bit more sedate and sophisticated with great music this is one place to check out.
It was busy when we arrived, taking pictures was difficult without consent so I returned to snap a few images for you. You can get the idea what it was like full of people laughing and enjoying themselves.
